Forged ironwork is a laborious and time consuming process. The work we create at Thak Ironworks utilizes many traditional blacksmithing and other metal working techniques. I am by no means a purist and often utilize many modern methods such as MIG welding and plasma cutting in my work. Used appropriately, quality traditional iron work can be created using these and other modern devices. For example traditionally an iron gate may have utilized mortise and tenon joinery throughout. This is visually a very attractive detail but very time consuming and therefore very expensive. Conversely a gate of all welded construction can look too modern or dull. A gate utilizing a few mortise and tenon joints in key areas combined with welded joints in others can satisfy both budget and aesthetic requirements. Many projects can be tailored to fit within your budget restrictions by compromising some detail without compromising overall aesthetics or quality.

Commissions
I welcome a large diversity of ideas for custom work and I’m willing to work with my client to satisfy their specific needs or desires. Having said this, my work has a specific style and most of my customers trust my discretion and creative whims to create something they will love.

When customers approach me with a commission it is helpful if they bring as much pertinent information as possible to the contact, including photo’s sketches (even really crude doodles), measurements, philosophical and artistic motivation, use, function, surrounding decor, inspiration and or course budget considerations.

Pricing and Quotes
Essentially people pay me for my time, my talent and my years of experience. Material costs in most projects represent a very small fraction of the price. It is the many hours I spend on each product that determines the overall price. Usually when people approach me with a potential product I give them a “ballpark” price if I have a general feel for the particular piece. This often weeds out the tire kickers from the serious clients. From there, a more formal quote and sketch follow. Depending on the size and the complexity of the project, there may be a cost associated with this, redeemable upon the agreement of the project. Certain projects are impossible to price out and may need to be approached on a time and material basis.

Terms and Conditions
50% down and the balance upon completion.
Typically delivery and installation are not included in offer and are billed time / materials.
Depending on the complexity or scope of certain projects, interim payment may be required.
It should be noted it is rarely practical for me to take on projects of less than $5000.
