The fleur d'lis has been a popular motif in European (not just French) ironwork of the last 700 years. From an artistic standpoint, it lends itself well as an end treatment in forged ironwork with it's points and flares.  Culturally, it has a whole different level of appeal and I find, personally, that a carefully crafted fleur d'lis adds a touch of majesty to hand forged iron.
