Japanese Blade Smithing Course
Course
Instructor: Muh-Tsyr Yee with Robb Martin assisting.
The traditional methods of forging a Japanese sword will be demonstrated.
Some of the areas addressed by instructor Muh-Tsyr Yee are; constructing the basic material by forge welding specific materials; forging the billet, and developing patterns by material manipulation; forge welding the final blade billet using materials of distinctly different characteristics; forging the blade to shape; cold shaping the blade; heat-treating using the traditional clay coating technique; and stone finishing.
Students will have the opportunity to hand forge and shape a tanto (knife) blade from 1050 steel. They will also heat treat their blades using the traditional clay coat hardening tempering. As well students will be able to do some finish stoning on their blades.
Course runs 8:30 am to 5:30 pm Monday to Friday.
