Instructor: Robb MartinThis course is designed for students looking to enhance existing metal working skills or beginners with an interest in medieval armour. The course project consists of a darkage style "spangen helm" or helmet. We begin with a discussion on pattern making and translating two dimensional shapes into three dimensional shapes. Next we transfer patterns to sheet steel and cut out the pieces using 3 different shearing tools and methods. These pieces are then shaped using several different dishing techniques. Shaped pieces are temporarily assembled and refined before disassembling, polishing and final assembly using traditional solid rivets. This basic helmet allows for many optional upgrades such as nasal pieces, cheek plates, etc. Here students are invited to experiment with their own design ideas and patterns. It also allows for the use of several other armour techniques such as raising, planishing, edge rolling, fluting and brass or copper accents. The course also includes discussions in other pieces and styles of armor from many different times and places as well as demonstrations of advanced techniques such as roping and sculptural embossing. Several finishes are also discussed and compared. Students work on a wide variety of tooling, exploring the unique complexity of medieval stake shapes and usage. Basic set up requirements are also explored for would be hobby armorers. This course offers an interesting and physically demanding emersion into the ancient craft of armoring with a tangible result at the end of your weekend.
